Everything below concerns lyophilised powder. We keep the language plain, cite what the science says, and separate well-supported claims from open questions.
Updated 2026-02-16. Numbers and descriptions here follow the published literature rather than marketing material.
Because the substance circulates mainly through informal markets, verification is a recurring theme in technical discussion. Independent analyses have found that labeled content and actual content can diverge, and that purity varies between samples. Analytical laboratories use reversed-phase chromatography to separate components and mass spectrometry to confirm identity. Isotope-labeled internal standards improve quantification in complex matrices. Such methods describe what a sample contains but say nothing about its sterility, lawful status, or suitability for any use. Open questions remain about how consistently testing is applied across the supply chain.
Regulatory treatment of this peptide varies by country. It holds no marketing authorization as a medicine in the United States, the European Union, or most other jurisdictions. Some countries classify products containing it as prescription-only or unlicensed medicines, which restricts lawful supply. Authorities have issued public notices warning that unregulated products may contain undeclared or incorrect ingredients. The molecule also appears on prohibited lists for competitive sport. These measures address supply oversight rather than any approved therapeutic role.
Published research on the compound remains limited. Much of the human data comes from small, early-stage studies rather than large controlled trials, and several questions about effects and variability between individuals remain open. Investigators have examined receptor activity, pigment pathways, and related physiological responses in laboratory and animal models. Findings from those models do not automatically translate to human outcomes. Reviews frequently note the scarcity of rigorous clinical evidence and call for better-characterized study material.
Regulatory status differs by country, and in many places supplying the compound for human consumption is unlawful. Vendors frequently label material as intended for research use only, a designation that shifts stated purpose but does not create a legal pathway for personal use. Certificates of analysis accompanying such products vary widely in detail and provenance. Third-party testing exists but is voluntary, and results are rarely linked to a specific lot in a publicly verifiable way.
Identity testing for a synthetic peptide relies on several complementary methods. Reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography separates the target from related impurities and reports purity as a percentage of total peak area. Mass spectrometry confirms molecular mass and can reveal deletions or truncations. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping provide sequence-level confirmation, while counter-ion content and residual solvents are measured separately. A purity figure alone does not establish identity, so a complete dataset combines chromatographic and spectrometric evidence.
| Property | Value | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Regulatory status | Not approved as a medicine | No marketing authorization in major jurisdictions |
| Scheduling example | Prescription-only supply in some countries | Handled as an unlicensed medicine where restricted |
| Sports classification | Prohibited peptide | Appears on anti-doping prohibited lists |
| Reported presentation | Lyophilized vial | Nominal content varies between vendors |
| Detection approach | Liquid chromatography–tandem mass spectrometry | Used in anti-doping and forensic testing |
Regulatory status varies by jurisdiction, and the substance is frequently described as unapproved for therapeutic use. Some authorities classify it alongside prescription-only medicines or controlled categories, while others address it through general consumer protection rules. Analytical surveys have reported mismatches between label claims and measured content in products sold online, although the scope of such testing is limited. Whether these discrepancies are widespread remains an open question. Discussion in the literature therefore tends to combine chemistry, supply-chain observation and policy analysis.
The material is commonly handled as a lyophilized powder in sealed vials. The solid dissolves readily in water and in polar organic solvents, producing a clear solution after reconstitution. Light, heat and repeated freeze-thaw cycles are the concerns most often raised in handling guidance, because peptide bonds and the constrained ring can degrade. Working solutions are generally prepared fresh, and material left in solution is treated as less stable than the dry form. These properties shape how laboratories store and aliquot reference material.
Identity and purity are assessed mainly by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography with ultraviolet detection, often paired with mass spectrometry. Retention time supports identity, while the mass spectrum confirms the molecular weight of the intact peptide. Purity is frequently reported as a percentage of total peak area, a figure that depends on the wavelength, column and gradient used. Impurity profiling may also look for truncated sequences, oxidised forms and residual counterions. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping provide orthogonal confirmation when required.
Melanotan-2 appears on the World Anti-Doping Agency prohibited list within the peptide hormone class, and several national regulators treat it as an unapproved prescription substance. Some countries restrict importation or sale for personal use. Because the compound is widely traded as a research chemical, the practical legal picture differs between jurisdictions and shifts over time. Human safety data covering long periods are limited, and whether repeated pigmentation changes carry any lasting risk to melanocytes remains an open question.
Freeze-dried melanotan-2 is normally kept as a desiccated powder at minus twenty degrees Celsius or lower, shielded from light and moisture. Peptides of this size degrade through hydrolysis, oxidation and deamidation, and each pathway accelerates as temperature and water activity rise. Repeated freeze-thaw cycles promote aggregation and loss of material, so aliquoting a stock solution before freezing is standard laboratory practice. Once dissolved, the solution is markedly less stable than the powder. In laboratory work, solutions are generally refrigerated and used within days rather than kept for months.
Identity and purity are usually assessed by reversed-phase high-performance liquid chromatography, which separates the target peptide from truncated or oxidised impurities. Mass spectrometry, most often coupled to liquid chromatography, confirms molecular mass and detects substitutions that chromatography alone may miss. Amino acid analysis and peptide mapping supply additional structural evidence, while nuclear magnetic resonance is reserved for full structural confirmation. Laboratories that examine samples sold online report wide variation in actual content, with some vials containing little or none of the labelled material.
tropism Also tropic movement. The directional growth or movement of a cell or organism in response to a stimulus, e.g. light, heat, the pull of gravity, or the presence of a particular chemical, such that the response is dependent on the direction of the stimulus (as opposed to a non-directional nastic response). Positive tropism is growth or movement toward the stimulus; negative tropism is away from the stimulus. See also taxis and kinesis.
Metabolic myopathies are myopathies that result from defects in biochemical metabolism that primarily affect muscle. They are generally genetic defects (inborn errors of metabolism) that interfere with the ability to create energy, causing a low ATP reservoir within the muscle cell.
(2026) study the visibility of fallow deer in broad-leaved woodland environment, and interpret purported hunting lesions on fossil bones of fallow deer as placed in areas that would be visible to Palaeolithic hunters in such environments. Evidence indicating that Aurignacian artifacts from cave sites in southwestern Germany were adorned with geometric sign sequences of comparable complexity to that of early proto-cuneiform is presented by Bentz & Dutkiewicz (2026). Conard, Janas & Zeidi (2026) report the discovery of two Aurignacian bird figurines made from mammoth ivory in the Hohle Fels cave (Germany). Isle de Beauchaine et al. (2026) study the morphology of teeth in the Aurignacian mandible Les Rois 2 from the Les Rois cave (Charente, France), interpreted as consistent with assignment of the specimen to an anatomically modern human. Röding et al. (2026) study the morphology of the Late Pleistocene frontal bone from Hahnöfersand (Germany) described by Bräuer (1980), interpret it as falling within the variability of Holocene Homo sapiens, and find no evidence of a morphology intermediate between those of Neanderthals and modern humans. Bossoms Mesa et al. (2026) report evidence of preservation of human DNA in pigment samples collected in and around Paleolithic rock art, including preservation of DNA resulting from deposition through direct human contact in the Escoural Cave (Portugal).
== Distribution and habitat == The death cap is native to Europe, where it is widespread. It is found from the southern coastal regions of Scandinavia in the north, to Ireland in the west, east to Poland and western Russia, and south throughout the Balkans, in Greece, Italy, Spain, and Portugal in the Mediterranean basin, and in Morocco and Algeria in north Africa. In west Asia, it has been reported from forests of northern Iran. There are records from further east in Asia but these have yet to be confirmed as A. phalloides. By the end of the 19th century, Charles Horton Peck had reported A. phalloides in North America. In 1918, samples from the eastern United States were identified as being a distinct though similar species, A. brunnescens, by George Francis Atkinson of Cornell University. By the 1970s, it had become clear that A. phalloides does occur in the United States, apparently having been introduced from Europe alongside chestnuts, with populations on the West and East Coasts. A 2006 historical review concluded the East Coast populations were inadvertently introduced, likely on the roots of other purposely imported plants such as chestnuts. The origins of the West Coast populations remained unclear, due to scant historical records, but a 2009 genetic study provided strong evidence for the introduced status of the fungus on the west coast of North America. Observations of various collections of A. phalloides, from conifers rather than native forests, have led to the hypothesis that the species was introduced to North America multiple times.
==== Domestic ==== In Quito and Guayaquil, Noboa supporters celebrated in the streets. The following day, support for González's call for a recount had dwindled as several prominent politicians of the Citizen Revolution Movement said Noboa had won, including Leonardo Orlando, the prefect of Manabí Province, the prefects of Guayas and Pichincha, as well as Aquiles Alvarez, the mayor of Guayaquil who added that "the worst is to be a bad loser". Pachakutik, "with total respect for democracy", congratulated Noboa for his re-election. The Social Christian Party also congratulated Noboa. The CNE dismissed the claims of fraud, saying the process had been "totally transparent." It added González had not yet made a formal request for a recount. RETO congratulated Noboa and announced they would support his administration in the National Assembly. On 19 April, the Ministry of Government declared a state of “maximum alert” over an assassination plot against Noboa. In a statement named “The revenge of the bad losers", it said "all security protocols have been activated” due to the threat emanating from “criminal organizations, in collusion with political groups defeated at the polls”.

=== Winter 1917–18 === 40th Division then took over the line north-west of Bullecourt in the Arras sector. It occupied a captured section of the Hindenburg Line named 'Tunnel Trench' and held those positions through the winter, despite its very weak battalions. Trench raiding resumed, 12th Suffolks being the victim of one on 5 January 1918, when about 250 Germans supported by a heavy bombardment, an aircraft and flamethrowers attacked the right front of the battalion at 06.30 and took about 200 yards (180 m) of the line and a saphead, annihilating an outpost. By contrast the attack against the left company were driven off by rifle fire before the attackers had cleared their own wire. The second-in-command, Maj Lemuel Lloyd, in temporary command of 12th Suffolks, organised several counter-attacks with artillery and trench mortar support, which finally recovered the lost ground at 18.15 that evening. Next afternoon the Germans again captured the saphead on the right, 12th Suffolks counter-attacking at 16.30 after arranging artillery support, but could not dislodge them until a party of 21st Middlesex and heavy guns were brought in. The Germans took the saphead yet again on 8 January but were finally driven out by 12th Suffolks and a company of 21st Middlesex, the battalion taking 19 prisoners. After that, raiding had to be halted when a thaw made the trenches impassable: they could only be reached 'over the top' at night.

=== Competition === There are currently two products approved as maintenance therapy following treatment of inoperable locoregional Stage III NSCLC with induction chemotherapy: Tarceva (erlotinib), a targeted small molecule from Genentech, a member of the Roche Group, and Alimta (pemetrexed), a chemotherapeutic from Eli Lilly and Company. Tecemotide has not been tested in combination with or in comparison to these products. It is possible that other existing or new agents will be approved for this indication. In addition, there are at least two vaccines in development for the treatment of NSCLC, including GSK's MAGE A3 vaccine in Phase 3 and Transgene's TG-4010 in Phase 2/3. TG-4010 also targets MUC1, although using technology different from tecemotide.
Pharmacies within hospitals differ considerably from community pharmacies. Some pharmacists in hospital pharmacies may have more complex clinical medication management issues, and pharmacists in community pharmacies often have more complex business and customer relations issues. Because of the complexity of medications including specific indications, effectiveness of treatment regimens, safety of medications (i.e., drug interactions) and patient compliance issues (in the hospital and at home), many pharmacists practicing in hospitals gain more education and training after pharmacy school through a pharmacy practice residency, sometimes followed by another residency in a specific area. Those pharmacists are often referred to as clinical pharmacists and they often specialize in various disciplines of pharmacy. For example, there are pharmacists who specialize in hematology/oncology, HIV/AIDS, infectious disease, critical care, emergency medicine, toxicology, nuclear pharmacy, pain management, psychiatry, anti-coagulation clinics, herbal medicine, neurology/epilepsy management, pediatrics, neonatal pharmacists and more. Hospital pharmacies can often be found within the premises of the hospital. Hospital pharmacies usually stock a larger range of medications, including more specialized medications, than would be feasible in the community setting. Most hospital medications are unit-dose, or a single dose of medicine.

Several enzymes can work together in a specific order, creating metabolic pathways. In a metabolic pathway, one enzyme takes the product of another enzyme as a substrate. After the catalytic reaction, the product is then passed on to another enzyme. Sometimes more than one enzyme can catalyze the same reaction in parallel; this can allow more complex regulation: with, for example, a low constant activity provided by one enzyme but an inducible high activity from a second enzyme. Enzymes determine what steps occur in these pathways. Without enzymes, metabolism would neither progress through the same steps and could not be regulated to serve the needs of the cell. Most central metabolic pathways are regulated at a few steps, typically through enzymes whose activity involves the phosphorylation by ATP. Because this reaction releases so much energy, other reactions that are thermodynamically unfavorable can be coupled to ATP hydrolysis, driving the overall series of linked metabolic reactions.
Sertraline has also been found to have high affinity for the CNS σ1 receptors. A role of the σ1 site in the pharmacological action of sertraline may exist, but the significance of sertraline affinity for σ1 receptors remains unclear.
As examples, Moderna's RNA vaccine candidate requires cold chain management just above freezing temperatures between 2 and 8 °C (36 and 46 °F) with limited storage duration (30 days), but the Pfizer-BioNTech RNA candidate requires storage between −80 and −60 °C (−112 and −76 °F), or colder throughout deployment until vaccination. In February 2021, Pfizer and BioNTech asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to update the emergency use authorization (EUA) to permit the vaccine to be stored at between −25 and −15 °C (−13 and 5 °F) for up to two weeks before use. As of May 2021, Walvax is conducting Phase III trials for its mRNA vaccine which could be stored at room temperature for six months. After a vaccine vial is punctured to administer a dose, it is viable for only six hours, then must be discarded, requiring attention to local management of cold storage and vaccination processes. Because the COVID‑19 vaccine will likely be in short supply for many locations during early deployment, vaccination staff will have to avoid spoilage and waste, which typically are as much as 30% of the supply. The cold chain is further challenged by the type of local transportation for the vaccines in rural communities, such as by motorcycle or delivery drone, need for booster doses, use of diluents, and access to vulnerable populations, such as healthcare staff, children and the elderly.

Only a small number of early-stage human studies have been reported, and most were limited in size and duration. No large late-stage program has established a general efficacy or safety profile. The evidence base is therefore thin compared with approved medicines.
The peptide is listed as prohibited in competitive sport, so laboratories develop detection methods and monitor for its presence. Its appearance in enforcement reports reflects that classification rather than any approved athletic use. Analytical work in this area focuses on identifying the molecule and its breakdown products in biological samples.
Chromatographic separation combined with mass spectrometry identifies the peptide and estimates its amount in a sample. Testing can confirm whether the expected molecule is present and at what concentration. It cannot establish how a product was manufactured or whether it meets any purity standard.
Dry powder is usually held frozen, shielded from light, and kept away from moisture. Desiccant packaging limits hydrolysis during storage. Solutions are typically aliquoted and frozen once, because repeated thawing shortens useful life.
